4 Tips to Starting 2012 On a Healthy Foot

4 Tips to Starting 2012 on a Healthy Foot

By SouthWest Fitness on January 26, 2012

  1. Get Organized.  Getting and staying healthy requires you to seamlessly integrate a LOT of things into your life.  That’s why being organized is the key.  You’ll need to plan and prepare your meals in advance… get your gym clothes ready for the following day… make sure you allow yourself time to get your workout in, etc.  It sounds basic, but so many people fail to do this, subsequently, they never reach their fitness goals.
  2. Create a ‘success’ environment .  Clear you kitchen and living space of any temptations.  If you have high-calorie foods you love that are accessible with just a few steps, chances are you will give in.  Avoid this in the first place by making sure your house only has healthy, body-transforming foods.
  3. Find ways to deal with stress.  Stress can literally put a screeching halt to all your goals.  It can cause you to emotionally eat, skip workouts, and more.  So start now by learning better ways to cope with and deal with stress.  Better yet, incorporate a daily stress-reduction program that works with your schedule.
  4. Get accountability and support.  No big journey should be undertaken all alone.  Getting help along the way is critical to staying the path, even when things get tough.  Find friends who can keep you accountable.  Join a group of like-minded people you can go to for support when things get a little hetic.  Every mega-successful person you read about had a little help along the way.  Give yourself the same advantage.

Chronic Disease Eat Well and Beyond

Lifestyle changes, good nutrition, regular exercise, and stress management, are the first line of therapy in the prevention and treatment of many chronic diseases. Lifestyle changes are recommended as the first line of therapy for chronic diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stroke, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, obesity, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis and more. To make the necessary changes takes knowledge, motivation, and support.

What FirstLine Therapy is:

FirstLine Therapy is a 12 week program run by Dr. Mark Ledar involving 3 individual sessions including measurement of BMI, percent body fat, nutrition assessment, and development of an eating plan, and individual sessions designed to inform, motivate and support individuals in making lifestyle changes. The FirstLine Therapy program’s basic principles are in accordance with the most current scientific research.

How FirstLine Therapy works:

One of the reasons diet and exercise programs fail is they are one-dimensional– that is, they focus only on weight loss. But FirstLine Therapy isn’t just about weight loss, it’s about achieving a lifetime of good health. So instead of counting calories, you’ll learn simple steps to help you take control of your specific health situation and easy ways to track your progress, tips for success, reminders, and other support that will help you achieve your goals and maintain your health improvement.

Why FirstLine Therapy works:

FirstLine Therapy has helped thousands of people regain their health and live fuller, more vibrant lives. FirstLine Therapy works because it addresses the underlying causes of disease, not just the symptoms. We’ll help you to take simple steps that you can make part of your lifestyle for life.

Reduce Risk of Chronic Disease, Healthy Weight Loss and More Energy with Firstline Therapy

Research indicates that many chronic diseases associated with aging are largely due to poor ‘lifestyle factors’
such as physical inactivity, stress and suboptimal nutrition. This makes lifestyle changes the first, and possibly
the most important therapy doctors can prescribe for the treatment of many chronic disorders such as: diabetes,
high cholesterol, metabolic syndrome, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, high blood pressure and heart disease.

It is this reason that the National Clinical Guidelines for most of these disorders advocate a multifactorial
lifestyle approach; also known as “therapeutic lifestyle change or TLC.” FirstLine Therapy® is a therapeutic
lifestyle program that teaches you how to make ‘everyday’ choices that will enhance your health, vitality and
longevity.

Dramatically Reduce Your Risk of Heart Attack

Understanding High Blood Pressure:

Blood pressure is the pressure the blood exerts against the blood vessel walls as the heart pumps. The pressure increases when the heart contracts and pushes blood into the vessels and lowers when the heart relaxes, but there’s always a certain amount of pressure in the arteries.

Blood pressure is driven by two physical forces — the one from the heart as it pumps blood into the arteries and through the circulatory system, and the other from the arteries as they resist this blood flow.

Blood pressure changes from minute to minute and is affected by activity and rest, body temperature, diet, emotional state, posture, and medications.

What is Normal Blood Pressure?

A normal blood pressure is less than 120/80. High blood pressure is 140/90 or higher. If your blood pressure is between 120/80 and 140/90, you have what is called “prehypertension,” which means that if you don’t take important steps, your blood pressure can turn into high blood pressure.

Long-Term Consequences of High Blood Pressure

When someone has high blood pressure, the heart and arteries have a much heavier workload. The heart must pump harder and the arteries are under greater strain as they carry blood. If high blood pressure continues for a long time, the heart and arteries may no longer work as well as they should. Other organs that are receiving the blood, like the kidneys and brain, may also be affected.

Having high blood pressure puts someone at a higher risk for stroke, heart attack, kidney failure, loss of vision, and atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries).

While high blood pressure doesn’t always cause symptoms, it still affects the body and puts a person at risk for those long-term health problems. In rare cases, severe hypertension can cause headaches, visual changes, dizziness, nosebleeds, heart palpitations, and nausea.

How is High Blood Pressure Treated?

Lifestyle changes, good nutrition, regular exercise, and stress management are the first line of therapy in the prevention and treatment of many chronic diseases.  Lifestyle changes are recommended as the first line of therapy for chronic diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stroke, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, obesity, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis and more.

Five Towns Trainer Says “Complex Is Best”

Wait! Don’t just skim down to see which exercise I’ve labeled as the best, get the whole story…

I’m often approached and asked to pin down a single exercise as the one that will help lose the most fat and sculpt the quickest. That’s not an easy question to answer.

You see, I’m very aware of the fact that though an exercise may be perfect for Client A, it may not be the best choice for Client B—hence my hesitation to label any exercise as the universal best.

That being said, some exercises are definitely better than others. And, yes, there are even a few that I would call the best.

What makes an exercise the best?
When you decide which exercises to include in your routine, it is important to consider the type of movement involved. The simpler the movement, the fewer calories you’ll burn and the fewer muscles you will strengthen. On the other hand, the more complex the movement, the more calories you will burn and the more muscles you will strengthen.

To put it simply, exercises that use complex movements will deliver better results than exercises that use only simple movements. Complex movements recruit multiple muscles, some to stabilize and others to perform the movement. This process keeps your heart rate higher than a simple exercise would, giving you a more intense workout.

What is a complex movement?
A complex movement is a multi-joint movement that recruits large portions of the body to complete the exercise. Let’s compare a simple movement leg exercise with a complex movement leg exercise:

The leg extension machine uses a simple, isolated movement to work the quadriceps. You’re in a seated position moving only your knee joint. There isn’t much involvement, if any, from other muscles and it doesn’t burn very many calories.

Now let’s look at a free weight walking lunge. You start by standing with your feet together and a dumbbell in each hand at your sides (or a barbell across your shoulders, or a medicine ball held at your chest, or even with no weight at all). You take a large step forward and lower your back knee, keeping your front knee at a 90 degree angle. Now you push off your front foot and pull your back leg forward, repeating the movement.

How many muscles did you utilize while performing the lunge? Probably too many to count.

You certainly worked your quadriceps, gluteus, hamstrings, calves, abdominals, supporting muscles in your shoulders, arms and back- just to name a few. You also raised your heart rate and really kicked your metabolism into high gear. That’s what I call a great exercise.

Question Of The Day

Question:

How Can Eating 6 Meals Per Day Help Me Lose Fat?

Answer:

It doesn’t make sense, right? Everyone thinks if you want to lose fat you go on a diet, you eat less. Frankly, that’s baloney. And it’s dangerous.

There are three reasons why eating frequently, in the range of five to six small meals per day, helps you lose weight. First, smaller meals are less likely to be stored as fat. Second, frequent meals help stabilize blood sugar levels and control insulin. This insulin control helps you stay in a fat burning state. Lastly, every time you eat, your metabolism is raised (meaning you use up more food as energy) due to a process called thermogenesis.

Thermogenesis is simply the name for the process of your body burning calories during the digestion process. That’s right, it takes energy (calories) to digest food. So eating itself is like getting a “mini-workout” on the inside without all the sweating and groaning.

To your best health ever!
