When you starve yourself your metabolism shuts down and you burn fewer calories. Eating 6 small meals throughout the day will give your metabolism a boost at each meal and you will burn more calories and lose fat.

By eating six meals a day, you create a feeling of satisfaction. You eliminate the desire for binge eating. Satisfaction is gained by the visual aspects of the food as well as the chewing and taste elements. Small healthy meals provide a wholesome lifestyle. "What gets measur ed gets better". Planning six meals a day forces one to carefully "think" about the quality of the calories one is consuming.

It is not only about eating 6 meals a day, its about consuming:

1. smaller meals
2. try and eat low-fat foods
3. Stay away from sugars and sweets, if possible.
4. the meals should be smaller and if you eat 1800 calories a day, then each meal should average around 300 calories (keeping the calorie count is crucial)
5. When eating, chew well, eat slowly
6. Choose the proper foods from this weeks food pyramid (the pyramid changes alot since there is plenty of money for studies) Eat vegetables, fruits, whole grain high fiber cereals/breads/etc., and low fat meat, chicken or fish. (Even Weight Watchers has made a change to its food program.
7. Get into an exercise program that works for you.

At the end of the day it is your calorie count, nutritional intake and exercise.

There are several benefits. For one, just the act of eating and digesting burns calories. Secondly, eating more frequent small meals helps keep you feeling less hungry and less prone to overheating during any single meal. If you're training hard, it also helps keep your protein and other nutrient levels at appropriate levels to aid recovery which ultimately helps control weight. Lastly, and I'm sure there are more, planning on meals every two hours helps plan for high quality meals rather than junk food. Just my 2 cents.

By eating 6 small healthy meals (and exercising), you improve your metabolism; creating lean muscle. Lean muscle then increases your metabolic rate...which leads to fat loss.
